Search and Print Tips for HTML5 Help
The following sections contain information about formulating search expressions and printing a topic.
Case‑Insensitive Searches
All searches are case‑insensitive; for example, a search for Relational Population Service retrieves the same topics as a search for relational population service.
Case sensitivity does affect the ranking of your search results.
Phrase Searches
To search for a phrase, enclose the phrase in double quotation marks (" "), as shown in the following example.
-
"Relational Population Service"
Full-Word Searches
To search for a full word, type the word (for example, process) and then press Enter or click the Search button. All topics containing that word or permutations of it (for example, Process, process, processed, processing, createExternalProcess, and so on) are then displayed.
To force a search for an exact match, type the full word enclosed in double quotation marks (for example, "process") and then press Enter or click the Search button. Only those topics that contain text that exactly matches the specified text are displayed.
Partial-Word Searches
You can type part of a word or any string (including numbers), press Enter or click the Search button, and then see the search results that match those characters.
You must type at least six characters before you see partial-word search results.
As a partial-word search is not limited to words only, it works with any string (including numbers) that starts and ends with a space. For example, if you want to locate the TCP/IP address 143.57.055.259, typing 143.57 into the search field and then pressing Enter finds the topics containing that string.
AND Searches
Searches default to an AND search; that is, if your search contains multiple terms, only those pages that contain all of your terms are returned in the search results.
To retrieve topics that include all of the search words that you enter, separate them with the space character, the plus character (+), the ampersand character (&), or the word AND, as shown in the following examples.
-
Relational Population Service
-
Relational + Population + Service
-
Relational & Population & Service
-
Relational AND Population AND Service
-
Relational and Population and Service
OR Searches
To retrieve topics that include at least one of the search words that you enter, separate them with the pipe character (|) or the word OR, as shown in the following examples.
-
Relational | Population | Service
-
Relational OR Population OR Service
-
Relational or Population or Service
NOT Searches
To retrieve topics that include one search word but do not include another search word, separate them with the caret character (^), an exclamation character (!), or the word NOT, as shown in the following examples.
-
Relational NOT Synchronized
-
Relational ! Synchronized
-
Relational ^Population
The search cannot start with ^, NOT, or !, but you can use ^, NOT, or ! within the search phrase.
Complex Searches
To construct a more‑complex search expression, use parentheses (( )) to surround the simpler search expressions, as shown in the following example.
-
((Relational AND Population) OR (Synchronized AND Database)) AND Service
Search Results
The pages that contain your search text are listed on the search results page. Click on a hyperlink to view that page.
In some browsers but not others, the word or phrase for which you searched is highlighted on the page that you view.
If your search does not work or it is taking a long time, try pressing Ctrl+F5 to clear your browser's cache.
Printing a JADE Topic
Print a web page with the image expanded to the full size, by clicking the Print icon at the upper left of the topic pane.
When you have printed a topic that contains an image, the image is not minimized to a thumbnail until you refresh the display (by pressing F5, for example) or you navigate to another topic and then back to the topic that you printed.
When you click the Print icon at the upper left of a topic, only the topic itself is printed to fit the width of the output page. (Selecting Print from the browser menu also outputs the Contents pane at the left, which results in only about half of the page width for the topic, making it harder to read and necessitating a lot of scrolling.)
